Essaouira, the former Portuguese Mogador, is one of the most authentic destinations in Morocco. Far from the hustle of Marrakech, this Atlantic seaside city seduces with its bohemian vibe, UNESCO-listed medina, and wild beaches. Here are the must-dos for a 3-to-5-day stay, based on our clients’ feedback.

1. The medina and its ramparts (1/2 day)

UNESCO World Heritage since 2001, Essaouira’s medina is one of the best-preserved in Morocco. Its blue-and-white ramparts overlooking the Atlantic offer a magical sunset. Inside, white alleys open onto argan oil, thuya wood, and spice souks.

2. The fishing port and its fish markets (1h)

Essaouira’s port is still authentic: blue fishermen fish with line, their nets are mended on the quay, and seagulls scream above the blue boats. Go at dawn (6-8 AM) to see the boats arrive and the fish auction. You can buy fish, calamari, and shellfish and have them cooked at the port for 50-80 MAD.

3. Essaouira beach (2-3h)

The main beach stretches for 6 km, windy year-round (paradise for kitesurf and windsurf). Cool waters, sand dunes, camels on the shore. Watch out for currents. For a wilder beach, head 20 km south to Sidi Kaouki (see excursion below).

4. Paradise Valley excursion (4h)

5. Surf or kitesurf at Sidi Kaouki (1/2 day or full day)

25 km south, Sidi Kaouki is a world-famous spot for its regular waves. Beginner lessons 250 MAD/2h. Private transfer 20 EUR / 1-3 passengers.

6. Argan cooperatives (2-3h)

Argan is Morocco’s liquid gold. Visit a women’s cooperative (recommended: Cooperative d’argan de la femme rurale) to understand the 24-hour process and taste the oil and almonds. 40 EUR / 1-3 passengers on a private excursion.

7. Imsouane, the surf spot (full day)

60 km south, Imsouane is an authentic fishing village turned surfing legend (the “Magic Bay”). Coves, cliffs, perfect waves for all levels. 60 EUR / 1-3 passengers, lunch on site not included.
